NEW YORK: Roger Federer won his third US Open championship in a row on Sunday by beating Andy Roddick 6-2 4-6 7-5 6-1 in the final.
Federer crushed the American in a 28-minute final set to claim his ninth grand slam crown and third of the season after triumphs at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
The Swiss maestro captured the only service break of a hotly contested third set by breaking the ninth-seeded American in the 12th and last game and never looked back.
Roddick, the 2003 winner, won just 13 points in the last set, which Federer ended emphatically with an overhead smash before laying down on his back in relief.
