NEW DELHI: Reacting to his father’s suspension from the Congress, Jagat Singh reiterated that Volcker was a conspiracy to get his father out and a completely doctored report.

“I liken Volcker to the Bofors issue. Both were about money. Ultimately the Bofors money was not traced back to the Gandhis and similarly the Volcker money was not traced back to us. If the Gandhis knew Quatrocchi, who had benefited out of this, how does it make a difference, as to someone we knew who made money out of this? If Quatrocchi, who is still sought after by the CBI can have his money returned, then what is this big deal being made about Andaleeb Sehgal, who was actually part of a legitimate UN oil-for-food programme? Why are we being treated differently?” questions Jagat.

Despite the step-treatment received by the Congress, Jagat says that they are not leaving the party. “My father has still not received the showcause notice so I can’t comment on it. But neither my father, nor I are leaving the Congress party. All those people who had constructed this controversy to get my father out are bitter after Pathak exonerated us. Now they are pressurising us to leave the party. People like Shri Prakash Jaiswal should just learn to shut up. Tell him to first manage UP and his job before pointing as to what would make the party stronger.”

Jagat mentions the Natwar Singh-Yashwant Sinha-Digvijay Singh friendship as an alliance of thought. “It goes beyond party and politics. My father has harboured these views about the nuclear deal for a long time and it’s just a group of like minded people coming together. There is nothing wrong with Amar Singh showing support. But we’re not going anywhere.”

Blaming the entire Volcker controversy as a US led propaganda, Jagat said, “Like Jack Straw could be removed after Bush prevailed upon Tony Blair, similarly the Volcker controversy started after the US expressed it’s unhappiness with Natwar Singh as the foreign minister of India. My father had different views on Iraq, Iran and India’s nuclear policy. Volcker has been going on since 2002. How come it was only after he became the foreign minister that his name got dragged in?”
