SRINAGAR: Breaking his silence for the first time since the reports of the alleged Lashkar-e-Tayiba (LeT) infiltration into the armed forces surfaced, general officer commanding (GOC), 15 corps, Lieutenant General Sarabjit Singh Dhillon said that “few cases of suspected espionage or links with militants is not something that requires a dramatic review because the situation is not alarming”.

“One or two cases of suspected espionage or suspected links with ultras are not something that requires dramatic review. This is an isolated incident and it is not the first time that such cases have surfaced. These have occurred in the past also,” Gen Dhillon said on the sidelines of the passing-out parade of 248 cadets of Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAKLI) at Rangrete here. The GOC, however, called for strengthening internal surveillance system to put an end to such cases. “There is a need for corrective measures and we should make sure that our checks and balances are improved. Also we need to keep watch on the unscrupulous elements,” he said.

Two jawans of JAKLI and one solider of 3-Rashtriya Rifles were arrested by the military intelligence after they were named by a militant of having links with the LeT. Two J&K cops were also arrested by the police in Jammu on similar charges.  JAKLI mostly comprises the youth of Jammu and Kashmir. It has 14 battalions and is one of the highly-decorated regiments of the army. “Three in a troop of 30,000 is a minuscule figure. We do take it seriously but it is not a cause for worry. JAKLI has 17 battalions and each one has a commanding officer. If he finds any wrongdoing he can take corrective measures,” Gen Dhillon said.

Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad in his address urged the troops not to succumb to any pressure and crush those who intend to cast an evil eye on the nation. “We should not come under any pressure whatsoever. No body can prevent us from marching towards prosperity and success,” he said.
