New Delhi: The government seems to have been freely granting the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sanction to prosecute its detractors and ministers in the previous non-Congress government.
For those who are close to the establishment, the government has been quick to deny such sanction to the investigating agency.
The CBI has sought sanction to prosecute eight former ministers in the central government.
The cases, 27 in all, pertain to corrupt practices. The government has given sanction to prosecute five of the former ministers. The total number of cases against the five taken together is 10.
The three who got away account for the remaining 17 cases. The CBI had sought government sanction to proceed against them.
While the government's decision in the case against a minister in the NDA regime, CP Thakur, was pending, it has refused to grant sanction for prosecution against the other two even in a single case.
One of them is Capt. Satish Sharma, who has 15 corruption cases against him. The government has denied sanction for prosecution in any of the cases.
The CBI had also sought permission to prosecute CK Jaffer Sharief in one case of corruption. The government denied permission.
Those against whom the CBI has been given permission for prosecution are ministers in the PV Narasimha Rao regime PK Thungan (four cases) and Sheila Kaul (two cases), Sukh Ram (two cases; Ram was also minister in Narasimha Rao government, then he left Congress to join BJP), Madhav Singh Solanki (one case; he was a minister in Narasimha Rao government), Rasheed Masood (one case; he is now a
Samajwadi Party MP).
