MUMBAI: Technology has stalled the admissions process into government and private engineering colleges. Thousands of students have demanded an extension in the dates by which admission forms have to be submitted.

The reason: a technical error in the online admission website (www.dte.org.in). As a result, the page doesn’t open. The admissions process is the responsibility of the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE).

After the bomb explosions, DTE had extended the date for submission of preference forms from July 18 to July 20. But students want a further extension. A worried engineer-to-be said, “The admission forms can’t be downloaded because of a server problem. I’ve tried for two days but the DTE website doesn’t display the forms. How will I get a seat in any engineering college now?”

Asmita Parve says she has tried for three days, “I’ve spent a lot of money in cyber cafés. Perhaps the DTE should go back to their old method of manual collection and submission of forms from their office.”

Some students have managed to get the forms, but the words are blurred. “As a result, several students couldn’t fill up the form properly. This problem is two years old now. The DTE should rectify the technical fault before it makes admissions online,” said Amit Vaidya, member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena.
