Hollywood’s caped crusader will soon give stiff competition to India’s very first superhero. While the Hrithik Roshan-starrer Krrish has sent box-office cash registers ringing, trade analysts are predicting that Superman Returns will also be a hit on Indian shores.

And for those who want to catch the action on an even bigger scale, there is the IMAX version for audiences in Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad. “To see action films on an 80 feet dome screen with 12,000 watts of sound is a great experience,” said Mona Shah, who has booked tickets for Superman Returns for her entire family at IMAX Adlabs, Wadala.

With audiences opting for the giant screen format to enhance the movie watching experience, IMAX screens in the country are generating substantial revenue for Hollywood films in India. Trade analysts however point out that it is not feasible to convert Bollywood films into IMAX format.

“Regular 35 mm Hollywood films are converted into IMAX prints using the expensive digital re-mastering technology. And the cost is anywhere between Rs50 to Rs60 crore, which is nearly the entire budget of a Hindi movie like Krrish,” said a IMAX source.

Earlier, films like Matrix Reloaded, Harry Potter and Spiderman were released in giant screen formats along with the 35mm versions. “IMAX prints have increased the business of big ticket films. About 30 per cent of the total revenue of Harry Potter and Matrix Reloaded in India came from IMAX screens. This is a substantial number even by global standards,” said Tushar Dhingra, COO of Adlabs Cinemas.

According to trade figures, Harry Potter and Spiderman grossed more than Rs3 crore in the IMAX Adlabs dome theatre in Mumbai. Dhingra added that he is expecting a full house over the weekend for the IMAX version of Superman Returns. “The giant version film will have at least a 12-week run and the collections are expected to be about Rs1.5 crore in that time.”
