The National Commission of Women, chairperson, Girija Vyas on Thursday asked for an internal code within the film industry and the censor board. "There is a need to have a code that deals with the promotions and stills that are used to promote a film. Most actresses complain that they are not aware that freeze frames (scenes from a movie) are going to be used for promotional means," said Vyas.

All this comes in the wake of the Shilpa Shetty controversy. A Madurai based lawyer has sued the actor for obscenity, based on a photograph, which appeared in an eveninger Tamil Marasu. Incidentally, the photo is a freeze frame shot from her movie Auto Shanker, which was cleared by the censor board. Her representative, Dale Bhagwagar, has approached the NCW for support as Shetty was feeling targeted. This is the reason that Vyas wants an internal code to be set in place, the modalities of which should be worked out soon. "In Shilpa’s case, she had no idea that a freeze frame was going to be used as a promotional measure. It is extremely unfair," she added.

When DNA asked her why suddenly the NCW was becoming a shelter hub for starlets — first Rakhi Sawant and now Shilpa, Vyas retorted, "They are women and if they need any support, we will extend it to them." Vyas however clarified that in the Rakhi Sawant case, she spoke to Rakhi about wearing sensible clothes. "You don’t need to bare to show your sex appeal. I will personally speak to Rakhi when I go to Mumbai and explain things to her. Why should we as women give others a chance to point fingers at us?" asks Vyas.
