After seven days in police custody, Sahil Zaroo, who had been arrested in connection with the illegal sale of shahtoosh shawls, was released on a bail of Rs25,000 by the Esplanade metropolitan magistrate court on Tuesday.

Additional chief metropolitan magistrate MH Beloshy stated in his order that as the co-accused in the case had been released on bail, there was no reason to detain Zaroo any further in police custody.

The court told Zaroo to be present at the Marine Drive police station once a week after the completion of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) case probe (where Zaroo has been booked along with Rahul Mahajan) in Delhi.

Zaroo’s advocate Majid Memon told the court that the police had been unable to trace the shahtoosh shawls. He said Zaroo was falsely implicated in the case as the shop belonged to his father. He was a student and had nothing to do with his father’s business. Memon told the court that his client was ready to cooperate with the investigating agency.

The Marine Drive police had registered a smuggling case against Zaroo on March 13. Zaroo was brought to Mumbai on June 22 after a Delhi court granted a three-day transit remand.

Meanwhile, Zaroo was produced in another court on Tuesday after the forest department secured warrant against him for “deterring a public servant from discharging duty.”

However, terming it as unconstitutional, the court rejected the forest department’s application and released Zaroo on a personal bond of Rs10,000. The court observed that a person could not be charged twice for the same case.

According to a forest department official, “Sahil was not cooperating during the investigation and not replying our queries.” Zaroo’s father Hasan Zaroo said, “We are being implicated by the forest department in a false case.”
