1972 - Zinedine Zidane is born. The Marseille-born player of Algerian parents becomes France's hero in 1998 when he scores twice to help the Les Bleus defeat Brazil 3-0 in the World Cup final. He is also a member of the 2002 and 2006 French squad at the finals.

The man who gave them the victory was 40-year-old Roger Milla, who was plucked out of semi-retirement on Reunion Island to take the world by storm in Italia '90.

He was used as a substitute and came on in the 54th minute against Colombia. He then scored twice in extra time, including one goal by taking away the ball from flamboyant goalkeeper Rene Higuita who liked to play a sweeper role.
