A gang of five men, who conspired to loot jewellery shops on Sundays, were arrested by the Mumbai Crime Branch on Sunday.

One of the arrested, 26-year-old Usman Sheikh alias Nanhe, worked as an accountant in a shoe shop owned by a Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi. Usman, along with the other four accused Ashif Khan, 24, Munna Sheikh, 20, Rajesh Gupta alias Bhaiya, 28, and Murshid Ansari, 27, were produced before a metropolitan magistrate court, which remanded them in police custody till June 23. The police have nicknamed them the Sunday Robbery Gang because they were known to attack on Sundays.

“The gang used to attack angadiyas, who are the unofficial couriers of the jewellers. They carry money and diamond or gold jewellery samples. After getting information from the angadiyas, they used to rob the jewellery shops. Usman was the leader of gang and he used to arrange weapons and get his men out of Mumbai to avoid police action,” an investigating officer said. “Usman had his weekly offs on Sundays so it was convenient for him to execute his plans on that day. This would allow him to avoid police suspicion and action.”

During interrogation, the police learnt that Khan was from Delhi. He had been arrested by the Delhi police too in connection with a robbery. An officer said Ansari and Gupta were involved in two robbery cases in Kandivali and Dahisar.

“Acting on information from the Property Cell of the Mumbai Crime Branch, we arrested the five robbers from the Chembur Naka,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Dhananjay Kamalakar. The police have seized a country-made pistol, five live cartridges, three choppers and a motorcycle.

Samajwadi Party state president Abu Azmi told DNA from Delhi, “If I’m not mistaken, there’s one Usman who has been working as an accountant in our shop for the past five years.”
