ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan Premier Benazir Bhutto has asked President Pervez Musharraf and his family to declare their assets in accordance with the principle of transparency, days after a court issued arrest warrant against her in connection with submitting a false statement of wealth.

"For the last seven years the General is reluctant to give an account of his assets since he seized power in coup de'tat," she said in a message to the People's Lawyers Forum Convention 2006 held in Peshawar on Saturday.

"The assets of political leaders are declared and published for public scrutiny every year, but the General is reluctant to declare his and his family's assets," said Bhutto, who along with exiled former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has launched a political campaign against Musharraf from abroad.

Under the present rules, all members of Parliament have to declare their assets annually. Major Pakistani political parties demand that the top military officials of the country who wield power and are beneficiaries of perks should also declare their assets annually.

Judge Rafi-uz Zaman of the District and Sessions Court here on June three issued arrest warrants against Bhutto and her husband Asif Ali Zardari on the grounds that they failed to respond to summons in connection with submitting a false statement of assets before the Election Commission.

Referring to the recent Charter of Democracy she signed with Sharif pledging to work for the return of civilian rule in Pakistan and oust the Army from politics, she said it was "a result of our experiences as elected Prime Ministers, whose governments were destabilised."
