    ALMATY: Up to 3,000 workers from Mittal Steel's Temirtau plant in central Kazakhstan held a rally on Sunday calling for higher wages, the Interfax-Kazakhstan news agency reported.

     

    The workers, who currently receive a salary of around 415 dollars (321 euros) per month, are demanding an increase to at least 448 dollars, the report said.

     

    Mittal Steel, registered in the Netherlands and run from London by Indian-born steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, is the world's largest steel maker.

     

    The demonstration at the plant, bought by Mittal in 1996, was sanctioned by local authorities and no incidents were reported.
