MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India has done away with the practice of annual election of its office-bearers. It has fixed a minimum tenure of two years with a provision for a year’s extension.

The election and tenure rules have been made the same for selectors as well.

The proposals were unanimously agreed upon at the BCCI’s special general meeting on Thursday to make amendments to its constitution, said board vice-president Shashank Manohar.

The changes will come into force from September, but the tenures of the existing office-bearers will be taken into account. Till now, the president, vice-presidents, secretary, joint secretary and treasurer were elected every year with a maximum tenure of 3 years.

“The two plus one (year) clause gives a broad gauge for the performance of the office-bearers and selectors,” said Manohar. “If one’s performance is not satisfactory, the board can deny that person the extra year in office.”

The new rules also make it mandatory for an aspirant to have one proposer from his or her zone. But the aspirant can have someone seconding the candidature from other zones.
