PARIS: Chilean ninth seed Fernando Gonzalez lost 6-4 6-1 3-6 4-6 6-1 to Novak Djokovic of Serbia and Montenegro in the second round of the French Open on Thursday.

Gonzalez, who had eliminated former world number one Marat Safin in the first round, capitulated after three hours and three minutes of play.

World number 63 Djokovic, who had never reached the third round at Roland Garros, will meet either Tommy Haas or Alexander Waske, both of Germany, in the next round.

Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia reached the third round on Thursday by defeating Oscar Hernandez of Spain 6-3, 6-7 (7/9), 6-1, 6-2.

The fourth seed will next play the winner of the tie between Juan Monaco of Argentina and Fernando Verdasco of Spain for a place in the last 16.
Ljubicic, who lost the second set's tie-break 9-7, was never really tested by the world number 131 and wrapped up the match in two hours 49 minutes.

The Croatian has never made it past the third round in a Grand Slam before qualifying for the Australian Open's quarterfinals in January.
