NEW DELHI: The row over the screening of Amir Khan starrer 'Fanaa' in Gujarat on Thursday reached the Supreme Court with filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt moving a petition for the peaceful release of the movie which has faced protest in the state in the wake of statement given by the actor on the Narmada dam issue.

The petition which was mentioned before a vacation bench comprising Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice C K Thakker is likely to be heard in due course as no specific date was given for its hearing.

The petition filed jointly by Bhatt and Gujarat-based NGO Jansangharsh Manch sought a direction for the state DGP for ensuring uninterrupted screening of the film which was released in rest of the country on last Friday.

Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, who mentioned the petition before the bench contended that Gujarat Government should take appropriate steps against the organisations which were opposing the screening of the film.

The petition said the organisations like BJP Yuva Morcha (Gujarat) and Congress affiliated NSUI (Gujarat) were opposing the release of the film without any cogent or rational reason.

Bhatt alleged that Gujarat Government has either directly connived with these organisations to prohibit the screening of the film or has deliberately refused to act to stop them from adopting the violent and illegal means to disrupt its release in the state.

Referring to earlier incidents of violence during the release of some other films like 'Fire', 'Water' and 'Kissa Kursi Ka', the noted filmmaker said such tendencies have grown unchecked and the miscreants and the anti-social elements and political parties are under the impression that the law cannot touch them.
