NASHIK: For once the women behind the men took centre stage. May Queen, the pageant, held annually, gives army officers’ wives a chance to show off their beauty and brains. Also their husbands enjoy the break from their daily grind and get a chance to appreciate their warmth their wives bring to their lives.

“Of the variety of roles women play in the lives of those they most care for, being a true friend is the most important. If she befriends people as a mother, wife, or daughter-in-law, then she will evoke the essence of each relationship truly and completely,” said Deepa Kiran, the winner of May Queen 2006 in Deolali.

Kiran is a mother of two and a creative writer who is pursuing a PhD in literature. She is the wife of an artillery officer. Her husband, Maj Shiv Kiran Kumar was ecstatic. So much so, that he couldn’t help but take several picture’s of Kiran wearing the crown. “I am elated. She has put a lot of time and effort into this.  I am also happy that she earned us a trip to Goa.”

Fifteen women from diverse professional backgrounds showcased their skills through comic skits, music recitals and dance performances in the pageant. The judges then chose five wives to go on to the final round.

Gul Bajwa Nat, second runner up and an advertising professional said, “The pageant has given us recognition and confidence.”
