MUMBAI: The Income Tax authorities in Vadodara have slapped three notices on Zaheera Shaikh, prime witness in the Best bakery case, for her failure to file returns for three assessment years beginning 2003-2004, her lawyer Umesh Deshpande said on Friday.

"The first notice was received by Zaheera in Byculla Jail on April 12 and it was handed over to me on April 19. The other two notices were given by Zaheera to me on Thursday," the lawyer said.

Deshpande said he had written a letter to Income Tax authorities in Vadodara seeking two months to file returns for 2003-2004, 2004-2005 and 2005-2006.

He said the income tax department had sent notices on going through media reports that alleged that Zaheera had accepted money for changing her statements in the bakery case.

They have also questioned the source of Rs 65,000 in Zaheera's account in Bank of Baroda's Mira Road branch in Thane district as well as Rs 15,000 in her account at the United Commercial Bank at Vadodara.

Both accounts had been frozen on a directive given by the Supreme Court that recently ordered Zaheera to undergo a one-year sentence for committing contempt.
