MADURAI: A complaint has been lodged in a local court against DMK leader M Karunanidhi by a dalit for allegedly making derogatory remarks on the dalit and Thevar communities at an election meeting at Usilampatti in Tamil
Nadu on April 23.

A Periyasamy, who lodged a complaint against Karunanidhi in the judicial magistrate's court here on Friday evening, alleged that it was an attempt to create differences between two communities and cause disharmony.

The complaint was filed under various sections of the IPC and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

Periyasamy said he was "pained" to see the news item in a Tamil daily that Karunanidhi had reportedly made certain remarks that "were intended to cause a major caste conflict between the dalits and Thevars".

Even the reaction of Karunanidhi while replying to a question during a press meet was also "provocative", he claimed.

Periyasamy said that such remarks were aimed at "provoking two groups of people who lived amicably with brotherly affection".

The complainant claimed that he was undergoing mental agony and also feared that Karunanidhi's remarks would lead to violence. The Usilampatti DMK candidate P.V Kadiravan was the second accused since he organised the meeting. MDMK leader Vaiko was included as a witness.

The case would be taken up for further hearing on Friday.
