Expats welcome new labour law

DUBAI: Indian expatriates and workers from other nationalities working in Saudi Arabia have welcomed the new liberalised labour law, which has come into effect from April 23.

The law obliges the employers to bear the expenses from the time of recruitment to their tenure, such as payment of fees for work permit renewal and also has made provisions to ensure that the expatriates receive the full end-of-service benefit.

It also prohibits forceful signing of a new contract whose terms and conditions are different from the original signed by a person in his home country.

An employer would now be responsible for the payment of fees in the case of a change of sponsorship or the profession and exit/re-entry visa. He is also required to provide a plane ticket to his employee at the end of the contract period, The Arab News reported.

According to the new legislation, in the event of death of an employee, the employer would have to bear the charges for transporting his body to the place from where he was hired.

However, no provisions to prevent the abuse of housemaids have been made under the legislation.

Speaking about the age limit fixed at 60 years for male employees and 55 for women, Labour Minister Dr Ghazi Al-Gosaibi clarified that professionals, such as doctors, university professors, consultants and engineers have been exempted from this provision, which otherwise bans the recruitment of expatriate workers aged 60 and  above.

Deploying a worker on assignments other than his profession for a period of not more than 30 days has also been permitted.
