Born in Ganpatichiwadi, a small village in Junnar taluka, orthopaedician Dr Kiran Shete, the founder of Pune-based Spinalogy Clinics (a clinic offering back and knee pain treatments sans surgery) has indeed come a long way.

Born in a village that lacks even regular electricity supply on November 30, 1977, Shete’s life story is an inspiring one. As a child, he had to walk seven to ten kilometres to reach the nearest high school. He confesses that on most occasions in school, he used to finish last. “I passed examinations solely on what I remembered in school and never studied. The turning point came in 1992, just before I entered standard X. One of my teachers, Karbhari Dumbre, felt that I had some potential. So he adopted me and let me stay at his home in Junnar taluka. His only condition was that I should top in class. Thanks to his guidance, I managed to come third out of 450 students in the SSC exams in my school.”

Shete’s struggles were far from over. He faced opposition from his father to pursue further studies as he wanted his son to work in the fields instead. Luckily for Shete, Abasaheb Garware College of Science gave him a scholarship. He studied hard, sacrificed his vacations and scored 99% marks in HSC examinations. Thereafter, he keep getting scholarships. He studied medicine at BJ Medical College and later specialised in orthopaedics. In 2003, he started working for Sancheti Hospital and gave guest lectures at DY Patil Medical College. It was here that he got the idea of starting Spinalogy Clinic.

“I observed that many people who came for treatment did not need surgeries. I realised that there was scope for a clinic that may treat back and knee problems without surgeries. I started studying the available treatments for back pain and met osteopath and physiotherapists. I felt that every individual had a partial solution but not the complete one.”

Shete started practicing as a doctor independently after completing his MBA from the Indian School of Business in 2008.

In June 2010, he opened the first Spinaology Clinic in Aundh with Rs10-15 lakh seed capital borrowed from friends and family. There is now a second branch in Koregaon Park and he plans to open two more in Hyderabad and Mumbai.

Shete said, “What makes our clinic different is that we are multi-disciplinary. We have nutritionists, dieticians, naturopaths, music therapists, accupuncture specialists and ostheopaths working together to help a patient. The other unique factor is that to the extent possible, we try to treat back and knee problems without doing surgery.”
