Yogesh Raut, the prime suspect in the murder and gang-rape of techie Nayana Pujari, in his statement to the police said that he escaped from Sassoon General Hospital in 2011 on his defence lawyer Biju Aloor’s advice. Raut claimed that he had given Rs2,000 to notorious goon Nitin Modha, who was also in the jail, to manage the doctor of Yerawada Central Jail hospital for referring him to Sassoon hospital for treatment.

Aloor said, “Raut’s claims about me are false. The police have purposely added my name to defame me. I had only discussed the case with him. As per the Indian Evidence Act, professional communication between a client and a lawyer cannot be disclosed to others. I will issue a legal notice to the investigating officer.”

Raut’s statement is part of a charge sheet submitted on July 29 in the court of judicial magistrate (first class) by senior police inspector Satish Govekar, who investigated the case of Raut’s escape.

Raut had escaped from Sassoon hospital on September 17, 2011 and he was re-arrested on May 31, 2013 from Shirdi bus stand. The statement reads, “In jail, everyone told me that I will be awarded death sentence in the case. My previous lawyer Aloor told me that the police have made a watertight case against me and if you want to get rid of the case, escaping from the custody is the only option left for you.”

As per the charge sheet, Raut discussed Aloor’s suggestion with Modha, in whose group he stayed in jail. “...Modha asked me to get money to manage the police and doctors in jail and Sassoon hospital. When I met my younger brother Manoj in court during hearing, I asked him to arrange for money and on the next hearing he gave me Rs2,000. I handed over the amount to Modha.” Modha managed the jail doctor through his assistant, claimed Raut.

“...the jail doctor certified that I had severe body itching and referred me to Sassoon hospital. I requested policeman Patil, who was escorting me in a van, to allow me to meet relatives. He asked for Rs2,000. Patil informed my brother about the visit,” said the statement. Raut claimed that his brother Manoj handed over Rs6,000 to Raut who gave Rs2,000 to constable Patil who removed the handcuffs.
