Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) railway police on Tuesday arrested a beggar woman who abducted a two-and-a-half-month-old baby boy of a mentally disturbed woman and sold it to a childless widow from Kamathipura for a mere Rs5,000 with the help of a female colleague.

What is more disturbing is the planned manner in which the crime was committed. Before selling the baby, the duo made a forged affidavit at the Esplanade court with the help of an advocate and a notary which stated that the female colleague was willingly giving her own baby to the childless widow for guardianship. The widow has been arrested, but the colleague, who acted as the go-between, is absconding.

“Sheetal Chouhan, 25, a female beggar, and Reena Beda, 38, the widow, were booked under sections 363 (abduction) and 368 (wrongfully concealing) of the IPC and the abducted baby was rescued from Beda’s house in Kamathipura. The duo has been remanded in police custody till September 9 by the CST railway court,” said assistant commissioner of police  Bapu Thombre of Mumbai railway police, adding that a manhunt has been launched for Chouhan’s associate, Nachhama Natral.

Senior police inspector Ashok Kumar Jadhav of CST railway police station said, “The incident took place at around 9am on Monday. It came to light when constable Manisha Ingavale noticed a mentally disturbed woman loitering near the passenger’s hall. During the preliminary inquiry, the woman told the police she was Sushila from Jhansi in UP and that someone had abducted her baby. She was then sent to Mahila Sudhar Griha in Mankhurd.”

To confirm the incident, the police checked the CCTV footage and found Sushila chasing a woman who was carrying her baby. She escaped by boarding a Badlapur local.

At around 10am on Tuesday railway policemen found a woman who resembled the one seen in the footage begging at the station. She was apprehended and on interrogation Chouhan confessed that she had abducted and sold the baby. The police then raided Beda’s house and rescued the baby.

The advocate and notary will also be arrested, police sources say.
