The 20% water cut in Pune may dampen the spirit of Holi. During these difficult times, some housing societies are keen on not wasting water during the festivities, while some prefer playing a dry Holi to save water.

Holi is all about playing with colours and coloured water. But, since the last week of February, the city has been facing water woes. In such a scenario, when the citizens are shelling out thousands of rupees on water tankers, they are in no mood to waste much water during the festival.

Florida Housing Society in Keshavnagar, Mundhwa, has decided to keep the celebration limited. The residents say that they would not be spending more than 100-150 litres of water for playing Holi.

Office bearer of the society, Dr ML Sharma said, “We have rainwater harvesting done which has abated our water problem to some extent. Yet, we do not intend to waste much water. Similar appeal has been made to residents. We will keep two containers with about 150 litres of water at one place in the society where residents can play Holi.”

The society, with more than 500 flats, will be winding up the celebration in the set limit.

Residents of Landmark Garden housing society in Kalyaninagar feel that only limited amount of water should be made available for the children.

“As we have faced water shortage, we have become wiser. The elders in our society are not so keen on playing Holi, but we cannot stop children. A container or so will be sufficient for them,” said Dr Ram Khante from the society.

Lunkad Gold Coast society in Vimannagar with 274 flats cannot afford to waste water.

“We’re getting about 14 tankers every day and are paying for it, so we will make sure that not much water goes into playing Holi,” said resident Raj Sajjan.

Other societies in Vimannagar too are concerned about water problem and will be celebrating dry Holi. Nyati Enclave in Mohammadwadi has appealed to citizens to go for a dry Holi.
