Vilas Bardekar went back to his kidnappers after he was released on Sunday.
He had realised that his camera and research papers were still with them.
Bardekar’s brother Ashok told DNA that eventually a few officials had accompanied Bardekar to the abductors and collected the camera and documents from them.
Furious, his wife Madhavi had said: “Do you want to go back to the death trap?”
Ashok said apart from Madhavi, her cousins Sudhakar Suradkar, Sunil Suradkar, and Sanjay Gavai went to get Bardekar.
After his abduction, Bardekar had contacted his nephew Akash Tayade. Akash had rushed from the US to Pune. “He worked relentlessly for his release,” Ashok said.
He said he was in tears when he spoke to his brother over the phone on Sunday. “He consoled me and told me that he was safe,” said Ashok.
According to him, it was because of president Pratibha Patil, Union ministers Sharad Pawar, PC Chidambaram and officials of the home ministry, the CBI and the Assam and Arunachal Pradesh governments that Bardekar was back home.
