MUMBAI: Thane is fast earning the sobriquet of being the hub of violent vigilantism. In the tenth such incident in a year in the region, a woman and her daughter were assaulted by a mob on Wednesday in Savarkar Nagar for allegedly running a prostitution racket from their house.

About 15 activists of Akhil Bharatiya Antarrashtriya Human Rights Association (ABAHRA), along with police officials, barged into Jayshree Desai’s flat on the fourth floor of Om Sai building. Desai, 40, and her daughter were later handed over to the police.

“We had received several complaints from residents of the building saying Jayshree and her daughter were involved in prostitution and that many men visited their home throughout the day,” Sushil Kumar, vice-president of ABAHRA, Thane, said.

“On Wednesday, around 12:30pm, when ABAHRA activists and the police reached her residence, they found a man with Jayshree. The police found packets of condoms from her home. A country-made revolver and half kg of some powder, which police suspect to be narcotics, were also recovered,” Kumar said. The police took Desai, her daughter and the man in their custody. Jayshree started abusing ABAHRA activists, who then assaulted her in the flat, Kumar said. Balram Bhadekar from ABAHRA said, “We took police with us so that Jayshree could be nabbed red-handed.”

Ramesh Tiwari, a resident of Om Sai building, said, “Jayshree and her daughter have been staying in the building for a year. During this period, we have observed that several men go to their residence at odd time. We had complained about this to our society’s committee, but no action was taken. It is good that ABAHRA people have taken action against them.”

Another resident, not wanting to be named, said, “I have seen people going to Jayshree’s residence late at night and then leaving early morning the next day. The faces kept changing everyday.”

“We have registered a case under Arms Act against Jayshree Desai and are further investigating the case,” senior inspector Bajirao Bhosle from the Vartak Nagar police station said.
