Meera Burman — octogenarian wife of legendary composer Sachin Dev Burman — who had been living the life of a recluse in Vashi’s home for the aged, ‘Sharan’, has reportedly been shifted following “excessive media glare.”
SD Burman, a scion of the royal family of Tripura, was to be posthumously honoured by the Tripura government on his 101th birth anniversary on October 1. A comemmorative book was to be released on the life and times of the musician at the hands of his wife Meera, known to be the moving spirit behind many a dulcent tunes the maestro composed in his prime.
In recent times, Burman’s wife had shot into focus after the death of her composer son Rahul Dev Burman. She refused to return to her native state and stuck it out in Mumbai in a home for aged where she was lodged by singer Asha Bhosale. Asha had married ‘Pancham’ Rahul.
A personnel of the home for aged, said, “The home is being needlessly hounded by the media. There is no felicitation programme being held here. In fact, her caretaker Asha Bhosale had come two months back to take her and shifted her to some other place. She no longer stays here,” she said.
Put up in a home for aged for over a year, this dancer and SDB’s muse, has been leading an uncared-for life. “She had lost her senses and could barely communicate. It was pathetic for an acclaimed dancer,” said an occupant.
Another occupant said the old lady was unhappy at the way she was being treated after the death of son Rahul. “If it can happen to a well known figure like her, there is little hope for us,” he said.
Meera Burman’s solitary existence made news only after the Tripura government decided to release a book on the composer.
