MUMBAI: Residents of Park Plaza society at New Yari Road are furious as a playground for their use has been turned into a dumping site by BMC.

Close to four truck-loads of construction debris were being dumped on a plot owned by BMC. The incident came to light when actor and photographer Parvin Dabas, who has a flat facing the playground on the 12th floor of the building, woke up at 2am on Thursday.

“The noise of the trucks woke me. When I reached the spot, I was told that the trucks belonged to BMC and I shouldn’t interfere with their work. On repeated requests to stop the dumping, they went away only to return at 2:30am along with a municipality officer,” said Dabas.

Dabas along with a member of the building’s resident association tried arguing with the officer but to no avail. But Dabas had recorded the conversation with the municipal officer on his digital camera.

“Please don’t interfere with our work. We are trying to level this ground as your residents association has asked us to do,” said the official in the footage, identifying himself as Dinesh Pimpley, assistant engineer, environment and solid waste.

Dabas then questioned him about dumping construction debris at such a late hour, to which he replied, “This is BMC property. There was some debris strewn around the Andheri Link road, which we had to remove from there.”

Shashi Ranjan of the Indian Television academy, who is a resident and chairman of the Park Plaza executive committee said, “How can they destroy a playground where children play? Especially when Andheri hardly has any open spaces.”

Ranjan had been requesting BMC to develop the playground so that the residents can avail of the open space but to no avail. He plans to lodge a complaint with the Versova police.
