A 24-year old call-centre employee, his girlfriend and her mother were arrested by the police on Thursday for allegedly trying to con a Dahisar jeweller.

Twice they went to the shop the same day, planning to steal original ornaments and replace them with imitations. They succeeded in  fooling the shop owner in their first attempt, but were caught trying it a second time.

Police said that the accused, Sweta Dholakiya, 23, a graduate, and her boyfriend Vipul Patel, a resident of Rawal Pada, Dahisar (East), went to Mangalmurthi Jewellers on Thursday morning. They told the shop owner, Bharat Taneja, they were planning to get engaged, and wanted to buy jewellery for the occasion.

“A staff brought them a few trays containing gold rings. Patel engaged Taneja in talks. Dholakiya pretending to try out the rings, managed to fox the staff and steal an expensive gold ring from a tray, replacing it with an imitation she was wearing,” sub-inspector Vijay Kadam of Dahisar police station said.

Their job done, Dholakiya and Patel told the shop owner that they would be coming back later to finalise their choice. Taneja suspected nothing and told his staff to replace the trays on display racks.

Realising that their trick had paid off, the couple got greedy. They went back to the shop the same day, this time with Dholakiya’s mother, Daksha, for another attempt. Seeing them return, Taneja thought that they had come to make the purchase.

Patel once again diverted Taneja’s attention. Dholakiya, with her mother beside her, started checking out the rings. Together they replaced four gold rings with fakes. And again they told Taneja that they would be coming back for the purchase later.

This time, however, Taneja smelt a rat, and checked the trays. He found out that some of the rings on the trays were not the ones he had. “Taneja then accosted the trio and called the police. On searching them we found the five gold rings stolen from the display trays,” a cop said.

“Patel, Dholakiya and Daksha have been arrested,” Kadam said.
