Mumbai: The Gamdevi police arrested three persons, including a woman, on Tuesday afternoon for allegedly submitting bogus documents to the United States consulate in the city while applying for a three-month business visa.
Those arrested, Gagan Deep Pal, 21, Tarunpreet Randhawa, 31, and her brother-in-law Navindra Randhawa, 30, are all residents of Punjab. According to the police, during their interviews at the consulate, Gagan and Tarunpreet submitted bogus certificates stating that they were Wipro company employees.
"When the consulate people called up Wipro officials to verify this, they learnt that the duo were lying," said Sanjay Diwadkar, senior police inspector, Gamdevi police station. In the certificate, Gagan claimed to be working as an assistant manager with Wipro.
"Tarunpreet was applying for the visa and found that Gagan was also trying to get a visa. She arranged the bogus documents for him and was supposed to get Rs10 lakh," Diwadkar said.
Navindra was arrested for helping Tarunpreet; the three stayed at Shalimar Hotel in Kemps Corner. "When US consulate officials approached us, we went to the hotel to arrest her," said Diwadkar. Later, when police interrogated Gagan, they learnt that the forgery was Tarunpreet's brainchild.
The trio was produced in court on Wednesday. "We want to know who provided them with the fake documents," said a police official.
