With constant threat of terror attacks looming over the city, the police force has decided to train its personnel to deal with any such eventuality.

Last week, the Bomb Disposal and Detection Squad had written letters to premier agencies such as the National Security Guards (NSG) and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), requesting them to increase the number of seats for the Mumbai Police in their training courses for explosives.

While the NSG has accepted the request, others are likely to consider the same.

In the letter, the Mumbai Police had requested the course director of the NSG at the Manesar headquarters in Haryana to allot eight seats for its BDDS personnel. Currently, only one officer from Mumbai BDDS is being trained at Manesar.

“Six exclusive seats have been allotted to the Mumbai BDDS for the specialised two-month training course on explosives,” said a senior police officer requesting anonymity.

The next NSG training course will start on November 8.

“We have also written to the ITBP at Mussoorie and a few other agencies to give us extra seats for their explosives-related training courses. We are expecting positive replies,” the officer added.

Explaining the need for such specific training, the officer added: “With increasing instances of terrorist attacks in the city, we wanted a trained team to tackle any emergency situation. The NSG training is more dedicated, more practical and they have a dedicated research unit of explosives, especially Improvised Explosive Devices. We regularly send our men for a two-week basic training, including orientation and exchange of ideas, to the training centre at Ram Tekdi in Pune.”

The 90-member Mumbai BDDS is presently short-staffed.
To fill up the vacant posts, the officials have made a list of constables who were trained at Pune and are contemplating absorbing them in the squad.

“If they are willing to join BDDS, they will be interviewed by a deputy commissioner of police. We have also issued a notification that 30 personnel from the city police who have received explosives training from Pune can join the squad. This way we will not only fill up the vacancies, but also get experienced men,” the officer said.
