A teenage boy speeding in an SUV killed a minor and critically injured three children and a man when he hit them with the vehicle at a colony in Kurla (west) on Sunday evening. The police are yet to trace the boy, who locals said looked 14 to 15 years old.

Residents of Kapadia Nagar said the incident took place between 6 and 6.30pm. The SUV, a Tata Safari with the registration number MHO4-BN-3067, was being driven in the reverse but at high speed. It hit an ice candy stall where four children were present, dragging them for 15 feet before hitting the compound wall of a building.

“We heard a loud noise, after which some people came out on their balconies and realised the mishap,” said Hakim Khan, a resident of Caravaan Cooperative Housing Society, the A wing of which was hit by the SUV. “A teenager who looked 14-15 emerged from the vehicle and took one of the bleeding kids to a distance of about 50 metres from the spot, but left him there. The kid had died by then.”

Two retired school teachers stay in the ground floor flat of the A wing. “They were offering namaaz when the incident occurred. They were so terrified because of the noise that when we knocked on their door, they did not open it for some time,” said Shama Shaikh, their neighbour.

The police’s version of the incident was different. Senior police inspector Vijay Bagwe of the Kurla police station said an 11-year-old boy Asif Khan, a resident of Roopa Nagar building in the locality, was driving a bicycle on the road. “He was the first to be hit by the SUV, which then hit the ice candy seller and pushed him along with the stall towards the Caravaan building. Asif died, while his sister Fatima, 9, and two other boys, Rehan Chaudhary and Shiraazuddin Qazi, who were playing inside the Caravaan compound were injured. The driver of the vehicle was 18 or 19.”

A case has been registered against the driver under sections 304 (causing death by negligence), and 337 and 338 (causing grievous hurt by an act endangering the life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code. The police are recording the statement of the ice candy seller, Kalpanath Nishad, 35.
