Team Anna on Sunday announced that it would formulate a constitution and the core committee would be reconstituted.

Sunday’s meeting, chaired by Anna Hazare, was significant because the present core committee had met in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday, following allegations of corruption against Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal and speculation that cracks had appeared in the team.

“We will invite suggestions from across the country for drafting the constitution,” Kejriwal said. A working committee would be formed once the constitution is framed, he said.

Hazare said his team members were not at loggerheads and “core committee members will face the challenges and fight back”. He said that Team Anna would continue the fight till the government passed the Jan Lokpal Bill. Hazare alleged that some people in government and the Congress were trying to tarnish the image of his team and insult the movement.

“A constitution will be framed for the movement... Once it is framed, the core committee will be revamped,” he said. The constitution will have provisions that would decide who can be members of the core committee and the working committee.

About allegations that he had diverted funds to his NGO, Public Causes Research Foundation (PCRF), Kejriwal said it had been decided at the start that PCRF would function as the secretariat of the movement.

“Also, I have worked as a joint commissioner of Income Tax. If I had not indulged in corruption then, the mere thought of me doing it now just for Rs40 lakh is nonsensical,” Kejriwal said.

Prashant Bhushan, who too was present at the meeting, said the team would weather the storms of allegations and harassments and continue its fight for a strong Lokpal bill. “If we quit the movement now, we would betray the trust of 120 crore people.”

About Bhushan’s controversial statement on going for a plebiscite in Kashmir, Hazare said the committee has several people and their ideologies are different. “The views of an individual member cannot be seen as the views of Team Anna,” he said.
