Malhar, this time, will not be the same. Blame it on the swine flu scare in the city. The three-day annual festival of St Xavier’s College will kickstart on schedule — August 14 — but there will not be any outstation college participating in it.

“All outstation colleges have been declined participation as a precautionary measure,” said Father Frazer Mascarenhas, principal, St Xavier’s College.

With only city colleges participating, the immensely popular festival will, no doubt, be robbed of some of its sheen. “Colleges from Karnataka, Pune, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu were supposed to have participated this year. From Pune, we usually have teams from Symbiosis and Fergusson College. However, all outstation colleges were informed about a week ago that they had been declined participation as a precautionary measure against swine flu,” said Shweta Radhakrishnan, an organising committee member (public relations), Malhar 2009.

All students of the city colleges participating in the festival will be required to get clearance from their respective principals to take part in any event of Malhar. “We have appealed to the principals to cooperate in this regard. The students and the management of St Xavier’s College are deeply concerned about the swine flu outbreak in the city.

We are closely monitoring the situation by the hour, and will take every step necessary to protect the students of participating colleges,” said  Father Mascarenhas.

The faculty and students of St Xavier’s have also been instructed to stay at home if any of them shows the slightest signs of the dreaded flu, such as sore throat, fever, cold, cough or breathlessness. “They have been assured that their attendances will be taken care of. Further action, if required, will also be taken,” said  Father Mascarenhas.

Umang, the annual fest of NM College of Commerce and Economics, too will be held as scheduled from August 12-15. “All necessary steps are being taken by us to ensure safety of the participants. We have also requested the participating colleges, both outstation and local, to get their team members thoroughly checked,” said Akshay Surana, vice-chairperson of Umang 2009.
