The Maharashtra government is fine-tuning the draft proposals received by it to undertake massive reforms in higher education in the state.

Higher and technical education minister Rajesh Tope on Monday told reporters that three committees formed to suggest measures to bring in reforms in the field had submitted their reports.

He was in the city for the inaugural function of the Symbiosis international conference on open and distance learning. “We are going through the proposals and fine-tuning them. This exercise would be completed soon,” he said.

Last year, the state had set up a panel headed by former University of Pune vice chancellor, Ram Takawale, for the bifurcation of varsities in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur.

The state government had also formed a committee for a transparent, flexible, simple and open system in higher education in the state. This panel was headed by former University Grants Commission (UGC) chief, Arun Nigavekar.

An apex committee headed by former chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, Anil Kakodkar, was formed to study the recommendations of the other two panels and forward proposals to the state government.

Tope said his department has finalised things for establishing the state’s first technical university. Although he did not declare the name of the city where it would come up, the minister said, “Technical universities have proved successful in the southern part of the country.

Hence, we decided to set up such a varsity in the state.” He said the draft of the university has been submitted to the chief minister.
