For students of the Akbar Peerbhoy College of Commerce & Economics, this Eid will be different. They have decided to make this festival of ‘kurbani’ clean and green. And thousands of residents at Nagpada and Mohammad Ali Road too joined them.
The campaign started at 11.30am with a rally and lasted till 2.15pm. “Every year we used to see a lot of blood and intestines of hundreds of goats on Bakri-Eid. This always disturbed us. But we couldn’t do anything. This year with our teachers’ encouragement and with the help of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, we tried to give it a chance. We talked to people and explained them how to keep the area clean. Thank God, people liked it and everyone cooperated,” said Abdul Basit Agloria, a student. The BMC helped them by putting big metal dustbins to store unused part of the animal.

Farheen, another student, says, “During Bakri-Eid people sacrifice their animals in the name of Allah, but they often forget to clean the area. There is dried blood on roads which not only give a nasty look but also emanates foul smell. There are many uneatable organs lying on streets. Being a human being it’s our duty to keep environment clean and tidy and to keep good care of animals so that everyone can enjoy Eid in a pleasant environment.”

Professor Hanif Lakdawala, who initiated the campaign, says, “Last year we did a small campaign. This year we went on bigger scale. But since it is a very sensitive issue, we kept a low profile. But the way people supported us, we think this campaign needs a larger platform.”
