Six-month-old road claims two victims in Pune

A senior professor and laboratory peon of the Dighi-based Army Institute of Technology (AIT) were killed on the spot in a gruesome road accident on the Wakdewadi-Sadalbaba Dargah Chowk link road on Monday.

The duo was travelling to the city on a motorcycle from Dighi when they collided head-on with an unidentified speeding bus.
While the professor has been identified as PV Bhat, 35, a resident of Sangamnagar in Bibvewadi, the peon, AM Doiphode, 42, is a resident of Dighi.

According to the police, such was the impact of the mishap that the victims were thrown off the two-wheeler. It is still unclear which of the two was riding pillion. But a helmet was completely crushed and both of them lay in pools of blood.

The bodies were sent to Sassoon General Hospital for post-mortem. According to the police, the driver of the bus sped with the vehicle after the mishap.

The police said Bhat was a lecturer in electronics and telecommunication in AIT.

In another accident, Santosh Rathod, 25, who was on his way home from Chandannagar via Kharadi on his cycle on Sunday evening was hit by a water tanker. Santosh, a resident of Kharadigaon, died on the spot. The police have arrested the tanker driver, Datta Palwande.

In yet another death on Pune roads, a pedestrian, Ram Shirsat, 45, was hit by a car (MH12 DB 7070) in Budhwar Peth area on Sunday evening. He was on his way to Dagdusheth Ganesh temple.
