The Pimpri-Chinchwad unit of the Shiv Sena has roped in students of the Swami Vivekanand School and local residents of Dapodi in their protest against the construction of a sewage treatment plant (STP) close to the school.

Several students along with over 2,000 local residents have signed the protest letter that was handed over to the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) authorities by the Sena.
Sena corporator Seema Savle, Maharashtra Vidyarthi Sena vice-president Sarang Kamthekar and other Sena activists conducted the signature campaign.

Over 6,000 students study in that school and the Sena has questioned the rationale of the civic body in setting up the STP so close to the school that could adversely affect the health of students.

As per the development plan, a plot in Sangvi was reserved for the construction of a 20 MLD (million litres daily) STP for areas like Sangvi, New Sangvi and Pimple Gurav.

“Since there are a lot of illegal constructions on that land, the local corporator had written to the PCMC to shift the project to Dapodi. The PCMC agreed to this proposal and decided to set up the STP near the school in Dapodi,” Sena leaders said.

According to Sena leaders, the STP poses a health hazard for the students. “The stench would also make it impossible for the students to sit in their classrooms and study,” they reasoned, demanding that construction work on the project be stopped immediately.

Irked Sena members questioned the PCMC’s rationale behind not removing the illegal constructions from the land in Sangvi to accommodate the project.

“This is why we are protesting and have also asked the students to participate in the protest to safeguard their health,” said another protester.

Kamthekar told DNA, “The PCMC did not even call for any suggestions or objections on the project in Dapodi before starting the construction work.”
