A school trip to an amusement park in Aurangabad turned tragic when a 15-year-old Borivli student slipped off a toy train in the cave town and died after suffering head injuries.

Saurabh Mhatre, a class X student of St Francis D’Assisi School, Borivli, was among 300 students on the trip. He reached Aurangabad on Thursday morning. The students were on their way to the amusement park, Sant Dnyaneshwar Garden, when the incident took place.

Mhatre and his schoolmates were on a toy train at the garden when he fell off. The train was filled to the limit and Mhatre and some other boys were standing on the foot board.  He suffered head injuries after hitting the metal tracks and died instantly.

“He had already started preparing for his board exams in March. We thought that the trip would give him a refreshing break from studies… The school should have supervised the children better at the trip,’’ said a relative.

The school’s manager, Brother Richard, said: “We only have sketchy details of the accident. But immediately after we heard the news, the principal left for Aurangabad. We informed the family around 10.30pm on Thursday,” he said.

Mhatre aspired to become an engineer and was one of the star players on the school football team, RP Jhaveri, a neighbour said.
