If the Mumbai traffic police have intensified their drive against drunken driving, can the regional transport office  (RTO) be far behind?

Maharashtra transport commissioner VN More on Sunday said RTO officials will be joining the traffic police to crack the whip against drunk drivers in the city.

“The major drive is conducted by the traffic police. But the RTO’s flying squads will be a part of the drive. We will also be launching a major, sustained drive against drunk drivers in the first week of January, when the state will observe a road safety campaign,’’ More told DNA.

The RTO has been creating awareness of dangers of drunk driving and had even suggested revoking licences of offenders caught during such drives.

The former transport commissioner had recommended that offenders undergo a short course to sensitise them about the perils of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Drunken driving has been a major reason for accidents in the city and state.

The traffic police this time have not only launched a sustained drive to nab drunk drivers, but have also warned hoteliers and pub managers.

In 2010, the state government has increased the punishment for repeat cases of drunken driving cases from six months to two years’ imprisonment and hiked in penalty from Rs2,000 to Rs3,000 to curb drunken driving cases.

A senior official said that the traffic police will also rope in additional manpower from the city police to keep the drive going.
The traffic police had started its drive against drunk driving in 2007 and till December 22 this year, 7,21,983 cases of drunk driving have been caught with 41,426 sent to jail for simple imprisonment and motor driving licences of 36,493 offenders has been suspended.
