The Wadala railway police on Monday arrested a Railway Protection Force (RPF) staff who was evading arrest for the past one-and-a-half years, in an extortion case.

“Head constable Kesari Prasad Deverani, 50, attached to the RPF office at Kurla, was arrested from his house at Central Railway Colony at Kurla,” said police inspector KP Gavit of Wadala railway police station and added that Deverani would be produced before the CST railway court on Tuesday.

The incident took place on December 11, 2008 around 7 am. Samsullah Haq Sheikh, 55 and his cousin Mamtaz, 35, resident of the transit camp at Dharavi, crossed the railway tracks near the platform no 9 and 10 to visit Lokmanya Tilak Terminus to meet relatives going to Gorakhpur. As soon as the duo crossed the tracks, the RPF personnel, patrolling on platform 9 & 10, nabbed them and brought to the RPF chowky.

The RPF personnel then threatened to put them in the lock-up and then took Rs5,100 in cash before letting them go. The duo lodged a complaint with the Kurla railway police station.
