The Maharashtra state government has decided to have a new municipal commissioner for the city, and a new person would be named within a couple of days. Mayor Mohansingh Rajpal claimed on Wednesday he was assured by chief minister Prithviraj Chavan that a new municipal commissioner would be appointed soon.

Rajpal met Chavan and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar in Mumbai to discuss the issue.

He told reporters over telephone from Mumbai that he met Chavan and Pawar as a representative of Puneites and demanded that the vacant posts of municipal commissioner and two additional municipal commissioners in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) be filled up at the earliest. “I have also submitted letters to both of them on this issue,” he added.  According to Rajpal, Chavan told him that the demand for municipal commissioner would be fulfilled immediately.

The present incumbent, Mahesh Zagade, has gone on mid-career training for eight weeks. Divisional commissioner Dilip Band has been given additional charge, but he has not been attending meetings in the PMC. Band has requested the state government to relieve him of the additional charge of municipal
commissioner. The positions of both additional municipal commissioners are also vacant.

There is growing demand by corporators to have a full-time municipal commissioner who could pay undivided attention to the civic body and also filling up of two vacancies of additional municipal commissioners. Corporators have become anxious as they think that the development works in the city have come to a standstill due to absence of top officers and such a situation in an election year is not good for them. Activists of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena resorted to agitation in the PMC headquarters on Wednesday to demand a full-time civic chief.
