In keeping with its biannual practice of conducting medical camps for underprivileged children, city-based NGO, Hope For Children Foundation (HFCF) is conducting medical camps for seven NGOs across the city.

The camp started on March 9 at BVJ Shikshan Sanstha (BVJSS), a Wagholi-based NGO that houses around 400 children, of which 45 are hearing and speech impaired. These are destitute children as well as orphans left in the care of social worker Shivlal Jadhav, who has been running this initiative for the past 25 years.

Caroline Audoir de Valter Ramos, founder and managing trustee of HFCF said, “Through the medical camps, we will try to tackle two main health issues of these children. While vitamin A is good for maintaining vision, it also helps in physiological activities related to the immune system, maintenance of epithelial and mucosal tissues, growth, reproduction and bone development.”

As for de-worming, she said, “Worms infect more than one-third of the world’s population, with the most intense infections being found in children and the poor. If the infection is long term and chronic, it can negatively affect a child’s health, cognitive development, learning and educational achievement.”

BVJSS social worker Motilal Jadhav said 29 children of the 400 were found to have skin problems due to impure water. They will also be dealt with by the organisation. He appealed to medics to step forward and partner with NGOs such as his for regular medical support.

Around 2,000 children will benefit from the medical check-ups that will end on March 25.
