Pune district collectorate witnessed uproar on Monday after the officers and staff went on a flash strike to condemn the alleged abusive language used by Shivajinagar MLA, Vinayak Nimhan, against Pune city tehsildar, Sachin Giri, on Friday.

In protest, Nimhan and his supporters gathered at the office and created a ruckus over the matter.

Speaking to the media, revenue employees’ union member, Deepak Pawar said, “We had given a written request on Saturday to additional collector Ganesh Patil to take action against the behaviour of Nimhan, but as no step was taken, we decided to go on a flash strike.”

As soon as the strike was announced, supporters of Nimhan arrived at the collectorate office with flags and banners, supporting him and ridiculing Giri. The mob barged inside the office compound, forcing the police aside.

The MLA entered later and said, “We had taken up a project called ‘Shasan Aplya Daari’ (administration at your doorstep) to provide services to our people, as they had to visit the office many times. We had filed 10,000 applications under this initiative.”

The Congress leader alleged that the issuance of certificates, including those under Sanjay Gandhi Adhar Yojana and caste certificates, was stalled for many days as Giri had not signed them. These certificates were to be issued by the revenue department.

However, revenue officials said that with the impending civic elections, these certificates were used by various political leaders to woo voters.

“Giri had said that he was unable to give attention to the matter as he was holding two offices. He wanted two days to sign the certificates and asked me to meet him on Monday at 2 pm. However, before the deadline, he (Giri) and his associates went on a flash strike,” claimed Nimhan.

Nimhan supporters attacked the police and one personnel was injured in the incident. Nimhan gave a written complaint against Giri to collector Vikas Deshmukh. “We have appealed to the collector to take action against the lazy tehsildar,” he said.

Addressing the media, Deshmukh said, “I do not advocate stopping work and causing inconvenience to the public as we also work late nights to complete work. But the employees undertook this flash strike as they were hurt.”

Even though Deshmukh said no case would be filed against Nimhan’s supporters, the Bund Garden police on Monday filed a case against Nimhan.
