The police detectives probing the sensational killing of gangster Farid Tanasha said that such meticulous execution of the shootout would not have been possible without the help of an insider.

Tanasha, an alleged henchman of the Chhota Rajan gang, was shot dead at his Tilak Nagar residence on Wednesday night.

The initial findings hint that the Bharat Nepali gang could be behind the killing.

The bullets found at Tanasha's home were similar to the ones used in killing lawyer Shahid Azmi in February. Nepali has owned up to the killing of Shahid Azmi.

Explaining why the cops suspect an insider's hand in Wednesday's killing, a senior officer said Tanasha's guards were not present when two sharpshooters barged into his bedroom and pumped bullets into him. The police found five empty shells in
the room. There were nine wounds on Tanasha's body, including exit wounds.

According to the police account, two sharpshooters entered Tanasha's home while six stood guard outside the main door.

"The two shooters fired five rounds at Tanasha from their 7.65mm revolvers. Interestingly, 7.65mm revolvers had been used to kill Azmi," the officer said.

The cop added that the assailants had conducted a recce of the building in which Tanasha lived. They knew exactly when the watchman would leave his post at the main gate for a few minutes, and made use of the time to barge into Tanasha's ground-floor flat.

The police are getting sketches made of the assailants on the basis of the descriptions provided by Tanasha's wife, Reshma, and their three-year old daughter.

A police source said that the assailants' “Mongolian features” indicate they possibly are Nepali supari killers.

Another angle could be Tanasha's enmity with a local cable operator. "Tanasha had been at war with a rival cable operator, who could have given supari to eliminate the gangster," another police officer said.

The slain gangster had attended the Christmas party, thrown by Rajan's close aide DK Rao last year, in which some senior police officers were allegedly present. The police said that Tanasha had been involved in several crimes including murder, attempt to murder, extortion and robbery.
