Police pre-empt tainted Arun Borude’s bail plea

Considering that Borude would surely make an attempt to appear clean before the court, police had studied the Powai rape case completely, so that a better defence argument could be put up in the court.

Anticipating that tainted senior police inspector Arun Borude will influence the case by projecting himself as a victim rather than the perpetrator through his bail application, the police prepared a questionnaire that would have made out his role in the case. And that is what had exactly happened. Whatever reasons Borude gave, were contradicted by investigations and findings.

“Considering that Borude would surely make an attempt to appear clean before the court, we had studied the Powai rape case completely, so that a better defence argument could be put up in the court,” said a senior police official, who is privy to the investigations.

Explaining some of the contradictions in the statement given by Borude in his application, the officer said, “There were 239 calls in which Borude had spoken to woman pimp Shantabai Gaikwad.

His application stated that he didn’t know Gaikwad, except for the fact that she was his informer. We had a strong question to raise: if she was his informant, then why is that Gaikwad has said he had phoned her only five times? Also, if Gaikwad was his informant, we would like to know what are the cases which were detected by Borude on the basis of information provided by Gaikwad?”

The officer also said that there were several contradictions in the bail application of Borude, which was found to be false in the police investigations. “Borude had gone into hiding stating that he is going to Ahmednagar to see her ailing mother. However, our inquiries revealed that his mother was in the city on November 8 and Borude had left with his mother, wife and daughter after he learnt that he could be arrested in the case,” the officer said.

“Contradictions have been found in what Borude had mentioned in his bail application and our investigations,” confirmed police commissioner Sanjeev Dayal.
