Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad will have more corporators after the 2012 civic elections, said state election commissioner Neela Satyanarayan in the city on Tuesday.

She was speaking to the media on the occasion of the launch of the official website and logo of the state election commission (SEC) of Maharashtra.

Governor K Sankaranarayanan launched the website at Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration (Yashada).

“The civic elections scheduled to be conducted in February 2012 will be fought on the basis of population figures of 2011 Census. As the population has increased, the number of elected representatives will also increase as per the logic of proportional representation,” she said.

Satyanarayan said the SEC received the population figures on Tuesday. The increase in the number of seats would be calculated and the figures would be released to the media early next week. The number of reserved seats will also change based on the latest census.

“However, the old system of rotation of wards for reserved classes would be kept intact,” she said.

On the introduction of online voting, the commissioner said the concept has been dropped due to various security concerns raised by political parties.

“However, this year, we are going to experiment with setting up of small kiosks for senior citizens, pregnant women and hospitalised people, to allow them to vote online,” she said.

Earlier, representatives of the National Society for Clean Cities (NSCC) and Professionals Party of India (PPI) discussed various issues related to the civic polls with the state election commissioner.

NSCC president Satish Khot said the commissioner had assured that suggestions and objections would be invited from citizens before finalising the limits of electoral wards.

“The commissioner had said that affidavits of candidates would be put on the state election commission website,” he said.
