The October 13, 2009 elections are likely to see a replay of 1994 with BJP general secretary Gopinath Munde playing the role of centre forward to take head on NCP president Sharad Pawar. Despite both BJP and NCP taking an image beating in parliament polls their spirits to slug it out in a do or die battle cannot be dismissed.

Specially, with heavy weights like Pawar and Munde leading the big battle from the front.
In a tactical move to frustrate the ruling combine, Munde has targeted Pawar to enable the saffron brigade to make deeper inroads in Marathwada, north Maharashtra and western Maharashtra. In 1994, the big two clashed over nexus of politicians with criminals. In 1994, the role of 40 to 45 rebels made a huge difference to bring the Sena-BJP to power. In Maharashtra. The Congress was routed in state.

In 2009 polls the saffron combine is again banking on the smaller individuals and third front to re-enact the old magic. The NCP rebels against Congress it hopes will cause severe damage to ruling parties.

This time the big two are clashing over developmental politics. Says Pawar, “The BJP is entirely responsible for taking the state 25 years backward because of its decision to scrap Enron project. Their decision spoiled the investment climate in the country. The power shortage is thanks to BJP’s short sighted policy.”

In sharp rebuke, “Munde wonders what stopped Congress-NCP from generating power in last ten years. Moreover, everybody known what happened to the Enron company at the end.”

Munde who has shifted his Delhi has given clear signals that he will not leave stone unturned to teach the Congress-NCP a lesson in assembly elections. Munde who visited his ancestral deity to offer prayers at Bhagwangad (Marathwada) said, “ The writing on the walls are clear. The Congress-NCP which ruled for ten years can no longer take the people of state for granted.”

Raising the tempers Munde is hammering a single question, “ How does the Congress-NCP government explain 10-16 hours load shedding in state.” On the issue of Enron the Congress clearly reflects its discomfort. The union power minister Sushil Kumar Shinde admitted, “The government had to pay Rs 10,000 crore for discontinuing the agreement with the Enron company.” In its election manifesto Congress-NCP admits, “Power situation will improve in 2011.”
