After a sustained campaign by residents of Nyati Enclave Co-op Housing Society Ltd and Nyati County Mohalla Committee (NCMC) in Mohammedwadi, a series of toilets were constructed by Nyati builders for labourers in the camp belonging to the group.

Residents of the area had been complaining about the nuisance of open-air defecation by labourers on an open plot just behind their society that also belongs to the Nyati Group. DNA had highlighted the problem on November 10 and December 2 this year.

Member of NCMC, Capt Deepak Sethi, had raised the issue at the sanitation committee meeting held on December 4 in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) where all representatives of various ward offices and mohalla committees were present.

“The meeting was presided over by deputy municipal commissioner (sanitation), Suresh Jagtap, and president of the National Society for Clean Cities (NSCC), Satish Khot. A follow up action was also assured in the meeting,” he said.

Meanwhile, pressure on the builder was also mounted by the Hadapsar ward office, which had sent a notice to the group vide no. 4163 (November 10, 2010) to take care of the squatting problem. While Nyati failed to reply to the notice, a second reminder was also sent.

Confirming the action, health officer of the ward, Suryakant Deokar told DNA, “We have sent a second reminder. If there is no response, we will take the matter to higher authorities. Our sanitation inspector is following up to resolve the issue.”

On December 18, Capt Sethi informed DNA that 10 toilets made of tin, 5 for males and 5 for women had been constructed there.

“There was also a watchman posted there,” he added.

Expressing satisfaction, the complainant, Poonam Bharti, said that united action by citizens and others had led to a positive outcome.
