The state government has assured all political parties that it will consider raising the permissible noise level at the Shivaji Park ground to 100 decibel. The demand came up in a meeting, convened by the state government, of MPs of all parties.

Not only the Shiv Sena, whose Dussehra rally came under the scanner for violating the noise level, but also the ruling Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party supported the demand.

Chief minister Ashok Chavan assured MPs that his government was in the process of taking the matter, of relaxing the decibel level, to court.

The meeting of all MPs from the state, held at the Sahyadri guest house, was to discuss the state-related issues ahead of the ensuing winter session starting next week.

The high court has banned rallies and meetings at the Shivaji Park ground, as the area is declared a silence zone. The court had recently directed the Shiv Sena that the noise level at its dussehra rally at the Shivaji Park ground should not exceed 50 decibel.

Sena MP Manohar Joshi raised the issue of noise restrictions at Shivaji Park and demanded the permitted level be raised to 100 decibel.

“The noise level in the city, at any given point of time, ranges between 45 and 48 decibel. Hence, the 50-decibel restriction was meaningless. The government should plead the court to raise it to 100 decibel at the Shivaji Park. The ground has a long tradition of political rallies,” he said in the meeting.
