The reluctance of the police to lodge an FIR against Lilavati Hospital in the alleged kidney removal case has baffled the victim Reshma Khan and her family.

Khan, 35, had approached the Bandra police station on June 4 with a complaint that doctors at Lilavati had removed her left kidney without her approval while she was undergoing surgery for a pancreatic tumour. “The police are yet to lodge an FIR against Dr Ravi Gupta and Dr Prasad Wagle. They have been giving evasive answers,” she said.

Khan’s main contention has been that even after the surgery she was not shown the extracted organ. She claims her son was refused even the specimen after her operation on May 13. “We wanted the kidney or at least the specimen for a second opinion but they did not entertain our request,” said Khan, who worked as a hair dresser with a news channel.

“The kidney is still with us and the patient can be shown that on request,” said Dr Ravi Gupta. Hospital authorities have said that Khan had never enquired about the kidney during her stay in the hospital following the surgery. The doctors have maintained from the beginning that the kidney was taken to save her life. PI Arvind Sawant of Bandra police station said doctors’ statements had been recorded.
